Central Hall Westminster’s events team rolled up their sleeves and got out their paintbrushes at their annual charity day to give Notting Hill Methodist Church* a fresh new look. The 18-strong team from Central Hall gave up their time to spruce up the church in Lancaster Road after hearing that its members had been so busy helping victims of the Grenfell Tower disaster that they no longer had the funds or time for a much-needed paint refresh. Staff from the central London conferencing and events venue, swapped their usual business attire for painting overalls to sand down and repaint one of the church’s stairwells. They also painted corridor areas accessing the kitchen, offices and activity rooms and glossed doors, door frames and skirting boards. Paul Southern, Managing Director of Central Hall Westminster, comments: “I had been speaking with members of Notting Hill Methodist Church about their tireless work in providing shelter and support to victims of the Grenfell Tower fire and asked if we could help in any way. Areas of the church building were in need of a freshen up and this seemed an incredibly worthy cause for our annual charity day. Somerset House today announces the launch of its first ever day delegate rate packages for conferencing events at the iconic central London venue.
The new packages allow conference guests access to the unique and versatile Portico Rooms surrounded by the impressive backdrop of Somerset House – a leading centre for contemporary culture in an exceptional historical setting. The first seminar, held in the central London venue’s George Thomas Room, began the year-long series with a session on General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and was attended by 16 members of the AAE. The two hour session was led by an expert in GDPR helping associations to understand the facts behind the fiction surrounding the new GDPR coming into effect in May 2018. The Zafferano Subterranean Supper Club, hosted in the iconic venue’s underground event spaces, treated guests to an exclusive four course banquet evocative of a time when the first foundations of Somerset House’s famous building were still being laid. This was the first event held to showcase the Deadhouse in partnership with Zafferano, one of Somerset House’s accredited caterers. Event production company, Fisher Productions and entertainment specialist, Eight Ray Music also supported the evening. The event kicked off with a drinks and canapè reception, which took the theme of great 18th century artists’ ‘still life’ creations. Taking Hogarth’s ‘Gin Ally’ as inspiration, guests were served ‘Bad Kitty’ and ‘Hanky Panky’ gin cocktails in copper cups before making their way to the imaginatively decorated dining table for a Beggars Banquet. Canapès included native oysters with Black Velvet shots and gin smoked salmon and potato drop scones with gooseberry compote. Guests were then led through the Deadhouse’s winding and mysterious spaces to the Beggars Banquet which included such culinary delights as potted mackerel, soused beetroot, apple salad and Herdwick lamb pie served with dauphinoise potatoes, brassicas and lamb jus. Pudding was a decadent affair when dinner guests were treated to a ‘Dessert Tableau’ in the theme of a Courtesan’s Parlour. Dishes included a macaron pyramid, opera cakes and Champagne and gold leaf jellies. This was all rounded off with Zafferano’s take on an espresso martini. The“Moll Kings Martini”, named after a notorious 18th century Covent Garden coffee house, was served in pewter coffee cups. Entertainment, provided by Eight Ray Music, included a live performance by classically trained composer, Okiem, famed for being Tinie Tempah’s keyboard player. Five choirs have reached the final of the competition and will perform in front of an expected audience of 1500 in the central London venue’s Great Hall. Well known for being a prestigious event in the Gospel music world and this year celebrating its fifth anniversary, the competition will be screened on BBC One in two programmes on November 26th and December 3rd. The five choirs taking to the stage in the Great Hall include the LCCM Choir, the Oxford Gospel Events Choir, Royal Voices, Singology Choir and The Big Sing: Gospel Voices who will all battle it out to take the coveted Gospel Choir of the Year trophy. There will also be a special performance from West End star Rachel John. On the same day, the Methodist Central Hall’s Sunday service will be televised for BBC Songs of Praise in front of a congregation of 700 in the Great Hall.
